The Old Synagogue in Essen (Germany) has been attacked. Police officers are on site inspecting the scene, but it does not appear that there is any danger to local residents, worshippers or members of the public.

Preliminary reports indicate that there were no injuries and there is currently no information on the background of the incident. The police operation is currently underway, and a spokesman did not want to provide further details about the incident for investigative reasons. Witnesses had reported bullet holes at the Old Synagogue in Essen. However, an explosives sniffer dog was in action and an investigative commission was set up. It was initially unclear when and how many shots were fired.

In Germany, there are repeated attacks on synagogues. The last major attack took place on 09 October 2019 in Halle. At that time, a heavily armed man tried to enter the synagogue, failed and then shot two people near him. During the subsequent escape, the perpetrator managed to injure more people until he was finally arrested.
